The call of the unknown: a journey without a plan
It all began in October 2009, with just a backpack and a thirst for the unknown.
Far from planned itineraries, the journey unfolded through intuition and encounters along the way.
Australia, with its wild open spaces and culture of slow living, was the first immersion into total freedom.
Then came New Zealand, a land of raw nature and deep serenity, where time seems to pause.
Finally, Asia — a place of striking contrasts, sacred rituals, and traditions of daily wellness.
Inspirations from afar
Every country left a mark.
Every place planted a seed that would eventually blossom into Hôtel Koru in 2015.
- Australia and the connection to nature: sleeping under the stars in the Outback, watching the sunrise over the vast Uluru monolith — that feeling of pure freedom. That’s the feeling we wanted to recreate at Koru: a place where you can truly breathe again.
- New Zealand and the Koru symbol: In Māori, “Koru” refers to the unfurling fern – a symbol of renewal, balance and growth. It was the perfect fit. Koru became the soul of this project – a place for regeneration, where each stay is a new step in your personal journey.
- Asia and the art of well-being: from Thai temples to Japanese teahouses, Asia teaches the beauty of simplicity. Daily rituals steeped in calm: the taste of slowly brewed tea, a massage that soothes both body and soul, the art of taking your time. These are all part of the Koru experience today.

After a year on the road, settling down could have been hard. But the opposite happened: the journey revealed a clear direction – to create a place where others could also experience letting go, well-being, and authenticity.
